The Organizing Principle

Stephanie Winston, in her book on getting organized, recommends finding an "organizing principle" in your life, which becomes the focal point for your organization in future. For example, during high-level meetings in Europe somewhere, it became apparent that the most important issue in organizing these meetings was the placement of participants around the table. If they didn't get satisfactory seating, they were going to be difficult if not impossible to deal with. It was realized that the organizing principle was the meeting table. The table was changed from a rectangle, to an oval, so that nobody was insulted by their seating place.

Whether or not it's always going to be the case, I've decided that the horses we own are going to be the organizing principle for our lives - mine and my daughter's. That means that everything we do has to take them into consideration - they are going to be our guides for the future. I think we could do worse than have horses for a guide in life, at least until we're stabilized, maybe for longer.

Saving Pigeon is the name of a story I wanted to write about a woman whose life became focused on saving a Thoroughbred gelding from slaughter, when she didn't have the resources to do it. She had to upscale what she was doing, had to increase her productivity, her money-making ability, her assertiveness, her ability to shove back bullies -- in order to save the horse. She eventually begins to use a combination of art and shamanism, and uses past horses in her life to save Pigeon. So, her organizing principle in revitalizing her life - became a horse. That's what I'm going to do now, and perhaps I can get the book written along the way.

My late husband objected to me calling the horse Pigeon, as he associated it with stool pigeon, so he is now known as Sammy. I thought of Pigeon for him, because I knew he was slaughter-bound, and when I saw his beautiful trot, I thought - he can fly, but he can't get away. Like a homing pigeon, he keeps trusting the people who control his life. Something like myself - I have talent, I could fly with it, but I keep trusting people who don't deserve it and who kick m when I'm down.

And that's that for today.
